Skin Talks

[The Senses Of Dresses]
SKIN, which examines the future integration of sensitive materials in the area of emotional sensing – the shift from ‘ intelligent’ to ‘sensitive’ products and technologies.

As part of SKIN, we have developed two ‘Soft Technology’ outfits to identify the future for high tech materials and Electronic Textile Development in the area’s of skin and emotional sensing.

The dresses show emotive technology and how the body and the near environment can use pattern and color change to interact and predict the emotional state.

Venturi Eclectic

[Entirely Self-Powered Car]
The car, on display at the Paris Motor Show, is entirely self-powered. The 22 hp, 50Nm electric motor is charged by 2.5 square meters of solar panels on the roof of the vehicle. There is also a force wheel to turn the wind into electric power. The car can cover 50km at 50 mph on a full charge. 200 vehicles, which look more like golf carts than cars, will be made starting in June of next year, costing 24,000 euros each.

[Decoding The Future With Genomics ]

The shift from cave paintings to hieroglyphics made possible the rise of Egyptian society, the pyramids, and the conquest of other peoples. The shift to binary code brought with it the era of computing and then the Internet, with vast implications for just about every area of human endeavor. Similarly, the rise of genomics has brought a shift in code toward the structure of life, with implications that are slowly revealing themselves. Enriquez argues that our ability to thrive in the culture created by this shift depends on our mastery of it, and companies whose futures lie with the intersecting fates of science, technology, and computing will do well to mind the knowledge gap -- and not get swallowed up by it.

Google 3D Warehouse / Skech Up

Simple View At Google Earth
Working with Google Earth and the 3D Warehouse , by Aidan Chopra

David Fisher's Work / Self Power Building

Dynamic Architecture buildings keep modifying their shape. As each floor rotates separately, the form of the building changes constantly; you may not see the same building twice.
Dynamic architecture marks a new era in architecture. This new approach, based on motion dynamics, is in fact a challenge to traditional architecture that until now was based on gravity.
Dynamic Architecture buildings will become the symbol of a new philosophy that will change the look of our cities and the concept of living. From now on, buildings will have a fourth new dimension TIME. Buildings will not be confined to rigid shapes; construction will have a new approach and flexibility. Cities will change faster than we ever imagined.

A NEW LOOK AT AN OLD DESIGN

THE GREAT CIRCLE / Mysterious Alignment of Power Places/Where're We?
Another puzzle is mysterious alignment of world's ancient sites. Easter Island is exactly aligned along a straight line around the center of the Earth, with the Nazca lines, Ollantaytambo and the Great Pyramid of Egypt. Other world wonders that are within one tenth of one degree of this alignment include: Perseopolis, the capital city of ancient Persia; Mohenjo Daro, the ancient capital city of the Indus Valley; the Oracle of Zeus-Amon at Siwa; and the lost city of Petra. The Ancient Sumarian city of Ur and Angkor temples in Cambodia and Thailand are within one degree of latitude of this alignment.

JOHN ABERCROMBIE: The Third Quartet

A Cool Night At Home/ECM

John Abercrombie, electric & acoustic guitar; Mark Feldman, violin; Marc Johnson, bass; Joey Baron, drums ECM 1993 (CD). 2007. Manfred Eicher, prod.; James Farber, eng. DDD. TT: 59:45 Performance ****½ Sonics ****½ John Abercrombie has never become a star like the other major jazz guitarists of his generation, Pat Metheny and John Scofield and Bill Frisell. He gives up nothing to them in chops or artistic depth, but Abercrombie lacks the instincts of a crowd-pleaser. There are guitar hooks that are guaranteed to bring the masses to their feet, and Abercrombie may never have twanged one in his life. He plays subtle, sophisticated, adventurous, lyrically off-center music. In the 33 years of his distinguished discography, he may never have made a more poetic, more fully realized recording than The Third Quartet.

E VOLVE TABLE

Design was inspired by natural fluid patterns and naturally grown shapes. This approach was translated
into an initial digital model, which was subsequently optimized using digital structural and artificial
intelligence algorithms. Special attention was paid to the organic, bone-like connections at the branches, where he complete ensemble splits up into it’s subparts, which make the table demountable for transport convenience.

100 Per Simplicity

Sophisticated Simplicity, Almost Sustainable
Hironao Tsuboi, half of 100%, the Japanese design duo responsible for the thought-provoking near miss Lamp/Lamp, has some pretty interesting things to say about design in an interview with PingMag. Among the tastier nuggets are his thoughts about what makes good design: the "timeless products [that] won’t get thrown away or get rusty, since they are here to stay. That would be good design." Though 100%'s work isn't super-sustainable, we do like their penchant for creating thought-provoking designs and the spot-on mix of function and simplicity.

Police Say Simpson Had Circuit Board, Wiring, and Play-Doh

BOSTON Troopers arrested an MIT student at gunpoint Friday after she walked into Logan International Airport wearing a computer circuit board and wiring on her sweatshirt. Authorities call it a fake bomb; she called it art.
Star Simpson, 19, of Lahaina, Hawaii, had a white computer circuit board and wiring over a black hooded sweat shirt she was wearing, said State Police Maj. Scott Pare, the commanding officer at the airport, compared with the traditional season

Real-time athlete monitoring is now firmly entrenched as an essential tool for elite athletes, with a growing array of sports monitoring systems available for both top-level sportspeople and your average fitness fanatic. This new body sensor currently under development at Imperial College promises a new level of usability by virtue of its form – the cufflink sized device clips behind the ear so as not to impede performance and delivers extensive metrics on posture, stride length, step frequency, acceleration and the body's response to shock waves.

Top 5 Super Geen Homes/ Modern Look

This is the first residential building to receive the USGBC’s Platinum LEED-H rating, and due to the media frenzy associated with this home, it has raised the bar for what’s possible in residential construction: zero energy, zero water, zero waste, zero carbon, and zero emissions. LivingHomes received a total of 91 out of a total possible 108 points required to obtain the Platinum rating. It will be 80% more efficient than similar sized home and was constructed with 75% less waste than a traditional one. Some green features of this house include a rooftop photovoltaic system, radiant heating system within the floor, grey water system for irrigation, LED lighting, EnviroGlas recycled glass countertops, and the use of low-VOC paints and FSC-certified lumber.

Green Air Zone

Sky Line Saver
March 28, 2007 With all the effort we are witnessing in developing environmentally progressive technologies for automotive applications, it’s great to see that Boeing researchers and industry partners throughout Europe are planning to conduct experimental flight tests this year of a manned airplane powered only by a fuel cell and lightweight batteries. The systems integration phase of the Boeing Research and Technology Europe (BR&TE) Fuel Cell Demonstrator Airplane research project was completed recently and thorough systems integration testing is now under way in preparation for upcoming ground and flight testing. The Boeing demonstrator uses a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell/lithium-ion battery hybrid system to power an electric motor, which is coupled to a conventional propeller. The fuel cell provides all power for the cruise phase of flight. During takeoff and climb, the flight segment that requires the most power, the system draws on lightweight lithium-ion batteries.
