Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) today announced a new strategic initiative to develop electricity from renewable energy sources that will be cheaper than electricity produced from coal. The newly created initiative, known as REC, will focus initially on advanced solar thermal power, wind power technologies, enhanced geothermal systems and other potential breakthrough technologies. REC is hiring engineers and energy experts to lead its research and development work, which will begin with a significant effort on solar thermal technology, and will also investigate enhanced geothermal systems and other areas. In 2008, Google expects to spend tens of millions on research and development and related investments in renewable energy. As part of its capital planning process, the company also anticipates investing hundreds of millions of dollars in breakthrough renewable energy projects which generate positive returns.

Toyota demonstrated ITS, its latest advances in vehicle-infrastructure cooperative systems, which use Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) technologies to enable communication between cars and elements of their surroundings in an effort to reduce collisions.The cooperative systems, presented at a media event at TMC's Higashi Fuji Technical Center, make road-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian-to-vehicle information exchange possible, resulting in audio and visual warnings to drivers when a collision is probable.

Angele is co-founder and first violinist in this all-female ensemble. I have been fortunate enough to see them live twice. They play with an intensity, precision and passion that I have rarely seen nor heard elsewhere. Their arrangements (mostly done by pianist/arranger Louise-Andre Baril) are also of particular interest for many of the more popular pieces they perform.

This particular piece, composed by François Dompierre, was written for La Pietà.

Although critically praised, I believe they may be the most under-appreciated gem in today's classical music industry. And having met Angele and some of the current performers, they are very gracious and kind as well!

As part of SKIN, we have developed two ‘Soft Technology’ outfits to identify the future for high tech materials and Electronic Textile Development in the area’s of skin and emotional sensing.

The dresses show emotive technology and how the body and the near environment can use pattern and color change to interact and predict the emotional state.

[Entirely Self-Powered Car]
The car, on display at the Paris Motor Show, is entirely self-powered. The 22 hp, 50Nm electric motor is charged by 2.5 square meters of solar panels on the roof of the vehicle. There is also a force wheel to turn the wind into electric power. The car can cover 50km at 50 mph on a full charge. 200 vehicles, which look more like golf carts than cars, will be made starting in June of next year, costing 24,000 euros each.

was born in munich, germany in 1965. after training as a cabinet maker at parnham college in england he studied design at the royal college of art in london from 1988-90. in 1990 he has worked in the studio of jasper morrison and in 1991 he was setting up his own design practice in munich. many of his products have received prestigious design awards, the mayday-lamp produced by flos was selected into the permanent collection of the museum of modern art in new york. in 1999 he won the competetion to furnish a public square in london's canary wharf. in october 2000 konstantin grcic is nominated "guest of honour" at the interieur biennial in kortrijk/ belgium presenting an extensive show of his work.

Hironao Tsuboi, half of 100%, the Japanese design duo responsible for the thought-provoking near miss Lamp/Lamp, has some pretty interesting things to say about design in an interview with PingMag. Among the tastier nuggets are his thoughts about what makes good design: the "timeless products [that] won’t get thrown away or get rusty, since they are here to stay. That would be good design." Though 100%'s work isn't super-sustainable, we do like their penchant for creating thought-provoking designs and the spot-on mix of function and simplicity.
