Iceland: life on global warming's front line

[ The Learning of Green ]
If any country can claim to be pitched on the global warming front line, it may be the North Atlantic island nation of Iceland. On a purely physical level, this land of icecaps and volcanoes and home to 300,000 people is undergoing a rapid transformation as its glaciers melt and weather patterns change dramatically. But global warming is also having a profound effect on Iceland economically -- and in many ways the effects have actually been beneficial.

BODIE and FOU

Rubber Tub/ Mindcraft

Green Plane/Boeing

During the flights, the pilot of the experimental airplane climbed to an altitude of 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) above sea level using a combination of battery power and power generated by hydrogen fuel cells. Then, after reaching the cruise altitude and disconnecting the batteries, the pilot flew straight and level at a cruising speed of 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) for approximately 20 minutes on power solely generated by the fuel cells.

Internet Kid's Safty

KidZui is an ambitious project, launching tonight, intended not only to make the internet safe for kids (aged 3-12), but to provide a browsing experience that caters to their cognitive powers and surfaces the best juvenile content as well. The concern for children’s safety on the net has been around for years and has usually been addressed with software that attempts to blacklist all the worst parts of the web (and pornographic websites in particular). The fundamental problem with this type of software is that no blacklist can be complete given the rate at which the web grows each day, so holes through which children can access the inappropriate content they’re supposedly protected from are bound to appear.

Intelligent Inspiro Oven

Electrolux redefines its range of high-end ovens with the Inspiro Oven that automatically selects the right heating mode based on the contents of the oven, at the push of one button. Unlike a convectional oven Inspiro uses sensors to calculate the precise combination of energy consumption and time needed to bring the food to the correct temperature. Electrolux President and CEO Hans StrÃ¥berg rightly explains the intelligent feature by comparing it to the auto-focus feature on cameras. “For the oven and for the camera, it is all about pushing one button to ensure a professional result.”

The New Classical Wave From 1997

[The Mahler Chamber Orchestra]
It was founded in 1997 on the initiative of Claudio Abbado and a group of musicians from the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra who wished to continue to play together even after reaching the youth orchestra's age limit. The combined principles of artistic curiosity and the broadest possible spectrum of repertoire, both at the highest possible musical level, guided the ambitious ensemble in its founding and continue to shape its work today. The ensemble’s repertoire reaches from baroque to contemporary and includes everything from chamber music to symphonic programming, from operatic standards to world premieres.
